THE FINAL WORD ON FOOD

The Bible is much more than a book of spiritual instruction. It includes instructions for the health of all of you: spirit and soul and body.

I have a challenge for you. On your way through the Bible this time, look for health tips. They are in some unlikely places and they will surprise you.

I believe that the Bible has answers to our health questions, whether spiritual, physical or emotional. It coaches us in a way of life to learn and follow — or not. Two of my favorite comments are: “And the very God of peace sanctify (purify) you wholly” (that would mean all of you), and, “I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Thessalonians 5:23)

I look for these hints to guide me toward wisdom, not to become a food dictator. I was impressed a long time ago by this statement in Psalm 81:16, which roughly says: He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat — and with honey — satisfied them. These verses nudge me toward integrity. I want to live by faith, live smartly in what I eat as well as how I believe and live: and I also think it should taste good. Is God good and always right?

I worked for a doctor when I was in my twenties. He claimed to be an expert on health. Yet, when he took his staff to lunch, he gobbled several vitamin tablets — and — ate what I wouldn’t. His “prescribed diets” have now been proven to be wrong.

Back then, I had already assumed the philosophy of my father: he believed that the Bible provides instruction about what is good for your body to consume. He called white bread “allenpuff”; “If you sit on a loaf of allenpuff it goes flat. There is nothing in it.” He would say
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (II Timothy 3:16)

The Bible is a science book, the final word on inward and outward health and beauty as well as human behavior. It is the bottom line for right and wrong, good and evil, what success is and is not: revealing who God is, who Jesus is, and by the Holy Spirit, showing the way to heaven when you die. But you discover the basics of what good nutrition is too.

Ice cream anyone! I think I’ll get one after my stir fries tonight
