No Despotic Husbands Allowed

We never should infer from God’s word that submission is silence, passivity, subservience, or being like a slave or child to a man. In fact, Scripture says to all of us that we should be “submitting one to another in the fear of God.” (Eph. 5:21) This passage, which is to every Christian, uses the same word in Greek given to wives (hypotasso).

In this sense husbands and wives submit one to another. . . no despotic husbands allowed.

The husband is not commanded to make his wife submit. The husband is commanded to consider carefully his own wife. The standard to which God holds him is to love, nourish, and cherish you as his own body: “For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord the church.” (Eph. 5:29) God requires this for the strength of the marriage—and for your happiness.

What Do You Think?

Write a description of the way you can encourage your husband to cherish you.
