Growing up with five brothers, and a father that believed they should be promoted, the vacuum of affirmation for me became “normal”. There was nothing to rise to; for me to step back was all I knew: that meant that I never believed I had anything to offer. How that expressed itself was: never try to step up.

Are women ever called to be doctors, engineers? YES. I have a step granddaughter who has just achieved becoming a doctor. She has a calling, a burden to develop holistic care. She is amazing. She is married. She is driven. Though I’ve had nothing to do with her rearing, I am proud of her. Tania, her mother reared her alone . . . that is until our oldest son, Josh, married Tania and entered the picture.

Are girls relegated to “behind the scenes”? Does the Biblical phrase for girls being “keepers at home” mean “stay at home dummy”?

Obviously not!

Wisdom is personified as female in the whole Book of Proverbs. At the end of that Book of wisdom is the girl and woman we can become and encourage our daughters to become. The wise woman found there is doer! A business owner, a familiar face in the market place, a real-estate entrepreneur, a vine grower AND a “keeper” of her home where every person is focused on, safe and loved . . . such a , a wife who is praised by her husband.

“Wisdom cries without; she utters her voice in the street . . .” (Proverbs 1:20)

“She cries in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she utters her words . . .” (Proverbs 1:21)

“Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” (Proverbs 31:28)
