A good woman drives herself in the effort to be more conscientious. She wants to be a good woman, a submissive wife, an ever present mother. But sometimes in the effort she punishes herself.
From some pulpits I got the feeling that all of those wonderful, awesome promises of God were to and for men — not for women, not for little ‘ole me.
The more I was willing the more miserable I was, the darker the cloud. I was willing to bow my head and put my nose in the dust, if that was what it took to be a good woman and an obedient wife,
Then I realized that God did not have humiliation for me. He did not plan unquestioned obedience to my husband. God had created me with gifts, ideas, creativity, and a personality that was counterpart to my husband. He had made me as a whole person with a spirit, soul and body.
Think it through: Has God created you in His own image? Yes, the Bible says so. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (Genesis 1:27) (emphasis added) What a privilege it is for you to fulfill all that potential and develop all those gifts and learn and express femaleness and wisdom.
I was put on earth and made a whole person to make a difference in my world. Whether the scope of influence was large or small did not matter. I am created in the image of God. There is a place for me to fill. This place I fill is not told to me by my husband, pastor, father or mother. It is told to me by God. I am gifted with a brain, ideas, uniqueness and abilities to express.
By Scripture and God’s Spirit within, I am given a clear picture in my mind to go, do and become. To give: not wait around to be told what to do.
I am given a personality by God and it is my privilege to express it, give it away.
My husband, Eric, has been surprised many times by what I say, what I do, who I am. In fact, he has told others many times, “You do not know the person you marry until you are married.” Then, if you allow yourself to, you grow and change and become wiser, stronger and all the more the female created in the image of God. He has plans for you. You are “his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)
