Ok, I should have caught on sooner. But only when I took the message of the Bible personally from God, and not as a secondhand message through somebody else to me, did I begin to grow whole and confident.
The world needs your persona, your voice , and your gifts. They are not to be put through the strainer of another’s opinion. Remember this: you answer directly to your Creator and he wants you to be the one he made you to be, not what someone else thinks you should be.
Accepting Scripture as your personal heritage will give you a sense of ownership of its message. It will change everything. To achieve that you must read the Scriptures and try to understand them. It may happen slowly, but it will happen.
Hundreds of years ago your Bible was translated for your benefit from Hebrew and Greek into your own language. This effort bypassed the elitists who thought it was not for the “common man”. They were determined to obstruct the teaching of Scripture to the every-day person. Many suffered and died to give you the Bible. Your freedom to read and understand it came at a price. Let this be the incentive to spend your effort to make its message your own.
There are false teachers too who sometimes appear alongside those who teach the truth. Galatians 2:4 warns us of “false brethren unawares brought in, who came in stealthily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus that they might bring us into bondage.” But you are free when you know truth and live by it—and you know the truth when you read it in the Bible for yourself. Remember, Jesus “was the true light that lights every man [anth’-ro-pos: human being] that comes into the world.” (John 1:9)
The Bible is there near you somewhere, on a coffee table, on a shelf. It is the best seller of the ages. God through the Holy Spirit promises that He Himself will be your Teacher. Emulate the Bereans who “were nobler than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” (Act 17:11) You couldn’t fool the Bereans, they would know an elitist or a false teacher if they saw one—they even checked out the Apostle Paul.
Be of a ready mind and think through the message of the Bible for yourself. Learn truth from Scripture. Work its truth into your life. This is a gift to you from God paid in the blood of those gone earlier. You will grow vibrant from the inside out. The excitement of discovery will thrill you as it has me. Just think of this: The Creator of all things will speak to you personally through the Bible.
