Last night I read through a children’s book I hadn’t read yet; “Horton Hears A Who!” by Dr. Seuss. His book “Horton Hatches the Egg” was one we had read to our boys as they grew.
But last night as I read one new to me, Horton the elephant heard a cry of the “unseen”, so small that he had to search to discover “Who” it was. “I say!” murmured Horton. “I’ve never heard tell of a small speck of dust that is able to yell . . . “
Horton didn’t discount that unseen voice, but championed their cause through hardship against the cruelty of the sour kangaroo and the young kangaroo in her pouch, and the gang of monkeys who went along with the leader, willing to discount, destroy, “A family with children just starting to grow . . .” Horton determined that the unseen, unheard would be rescued. They would be seen and heard.
How can we, thinking ourselves a civilized nation have come to this! It is incredulous that we abort, that is: “do away with”, the defenseless, the small, and the unseen in our wombs!
“Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel …;” (Lamentations 4:3).
Mothers who otherwise might have known the passionate love for their baby, might have known what it means to take responsibility for this life, might have known and grow from this responsibility, will never know the compassionate love for that one created through her by God.
This is a call to every man and woman who is willing to listen for the small, defenseless,
unseen voice . . . and fight for them.
